Building Your Own Backyard Chain Link Dog Kennel

By Scott Jackson

A chain link dog kennel is a cost friendly means of building your dog a home outside of your home. Not all of us are blessed with a fenced-in backyard. The possibility of our dog or puppy wandering into neighborhood traffic or deep dangerous woods, not to mention being attacked by another animal or neighborhood dog, is definitely something we'd like to prevent but fencing in an entire yard can be very expensive. Many dog owners rent rather than own their own house or condo and can't very well build a fence around a property they don't personally own. This is why many people have turned to the option of building their own kennel.

Building a chain link kennel isn't very difficult. The most important part of the process is probably determining the necessary size and dimensions. Take the size of your dog into consideration. A smaller dog wouldn't need a very large space so building a chain link dog kennel for a small dog isn't too much of a chore. Just be sure to ask yourself if your dog is done growing so you don't have to dismantle a perfectly good chain link dog kennel that no longer accommodates the size of your dog. Consider things like whether or not your dog is a jumper when determining how high your chain link fence should be.

You can buy different types of a chain link fence ranging between three and ten feet in height. You need to determine the parameters of your space to decide if you need 50 feet of chain link fencing or 100 feet. Some of the wire fencing will have different designs and spacing. You may find small or large holes in the wire depending on the type of fencing. Standard metal posts, cemented into the ground, are considered ideal for your chain link dog kennel but landscape timbers are also used for a less permanent kennel that may have to be moved from time to time. Some dog owners actually prefer the landscape timber posts because they are sturdier and can be cut down to any size.

Building your own chain link dog kennel is simple with the right planning, materials and craftsmanship. Sure, you have other options like hiring someone or purchasing a pre-built dog kennel but think of the pride that will come from building a chain link kennel that keeps your dog happy, safe and out of your hair
